Paul started many churches in Galatia, but some time along the way, there were false teachers who began telling the Galatian believers that they needed to do more than just have faith in Jesus. Because the false teachers kept emphasizing that they needed to obey the law of Moses, the Galatian church became confused…and they began to forget that Christians are saved by faith in Jesus alone. Paul wrote letters to remind the believers of the true gospel–that we cannot earn our salvation simply by obeying laws. We are all sinners in need of grace and if we were to depend on our own strength to follow rules perfectly, we would fail miserably. When we believe in Jesus, it is the Holy Spirit who works in our hearts to naturally want to obey God.
The FaithKids Juniors participated in a drawing activity where they were told they were going to draw the most beautiful sun. All they had to do was listen to the instructions and if they followed closely, they would be able to see the sun in all its beauty.
What they didn’t know was that the instructions given to them were actually for drawing a house! Yet because they trusted the leader who gave the false instructions, they were led astray….and they were unable to see that beautiful sun drawing come into fruition.
Some of the Juniors recognized along the way that what we were drawing looked more like a house than a sun. They questioned the picture, but when told to keep drawing, they continued to follow. At the end of the activity, we discussed how this is exactly what happened to the Galatians! They listened to the instructions of false teachers and forgot the truth of the gospel. This is why it is so important to have people like Paul in our lives who can remind us that Jesus is the only one who can save us and we are saved by faith alone.
We have reached the end of this unit, and our key passage we have been reciting reminds us that there is no other name, no other gospel, by which we are saved. “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Let us hold onto this truth and remember it…so that we aren’t so easily led astray to drawing houses when we were set apart to display the most beautiful sun!
