Belief Statements

1. The Gospel

We believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Unlike the holy and righteous God, we are sinful and depraved. Thus, we need a Lord and saviour to rescue us by becoming a perfect sacrifice that satisfies the wrath and justice of God. Jesus did that by becoming man for us, making it possible for him to suffer and die on the cross. Then, by dying at the hands of humankind, he became our propitiation* and saviour. But death did not ultimately conquer him. God also raised him from the dead, eternally sealing a victory over Satan, sin and death. Consequently, Jesus was exalted over everything to become Lord of all. Thus, he is most worthy to be enjoyed and worshipped.

*The term “propitiation” (hilasmos) means “satisfaction,” “appeasement.” Theologically, propitiation means that God’s wrath against sin, demanded by His justice, is appeased on account of the death of Christ for sinners.

2. The Bible

The Bible is God’s words1 revealed in the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments.2 These texts were written by men who were directed by the Holy Spirit.3 Therefore, the Bible is infallible 4 in all of its teachings about faith and practice.5 As such, it is authoritative over all humans. The Bible is centrally about God.6 By the Spirit of God, what it testifies about Jesus 7 leads men and women to salvation.8

4. The Trinity

There is only one living and true God who exists as three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each person is coequal and co-eternal in the Godhead. That being said, the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit and the Spirit is not the Father.

5. Sin

Sin is the transgression of God’s moral law.1 This law is God’s revealed will2 for us to be perfectly3 holy4 in act, attitude and nature5 to the glory of God.6

6. Salvation

Only God’s free grace1 can save sinners from the consequences of sin, namely God’s wrath and eternal punishment. He does this by sending his only Son to die a penal substitutionary death on the cross.2 In other words, Jesus takes the penalty for our sin by becoming sin for us; in exchange, he imputes his righteousness to us.3 This sacrifice is vicarious for those that have faith. 4 It is our only justification before God.5
